Julia for Hire!

Due to recent unexpected personal circumstances, I am in a bit of a financial pinch. [Note: I was trying to be vague with this wording, but someone joked that “financial” must mean I lost money in stocks or crypto or something, so: I’m dealing with an unexpected medical issue & my partner is in between jobs.] Not quite at crowdfunding levels of seriousness just yet — and hopefully it doesn’t get to that point. But enough so that I am looking to bring in more income than I usually do over the next several months.

And hopefully you can help with that! Or perhaps I can help you (or someone you know) with a project, event, or other endeavor. A bunch of possibilities are listed below, so please give this a quick read and feel free to share with anyone you think may be interested or able to help!

Obviously, the easiest thing you can do — especially if you appreciate my work and that I make many of my writings free and accessible online — is to please consider supporting me on Patreon for as little as $1 a month.

On the other end of the commitment spectrum: If you have or know about a job opening that I might be well-suited for, I am all ears. Part-time is preferable, but I’d consider full-time (or temporary full-time) under the right circumstances (I’m located in Oakland, California btw). My background is in biology (here’s my CV), plus I’ve spent the last few decades writing about gender, sexuality, science, and social justice, with an emphasis on feminist and LGBTQIA+ issues (here’s my bibliography). I am computer savvy and have been self-employed for over a decade, so I can do most tasks associated with running a small business. Anyway, if I seem like a potential fit, feel free to reach out to me and we can discuss!

In lieu of that, I expect that I’ll be piecing together income from various sources (as one does). Here is a list of things I can do:

Public Speaking

  • I routinely speak at colleges, conferences, companies, and Pride events. If your organization is interested in potentially hosting me (in person or virtually), please check out my booking webpage — it includes descriptions of some of my standard talks.
  • Or if your budget is more limited, I can do more informal events, such as readings, panels, virtual class visits, Q&As, etc. — I can do these for less money because they don’t require the same amount of preparation and practice as a formal talk.

Writing and Research

  • I used to do freelance writing on a more regular basis, but I stopped because many media outlets only offer about $200–$250 per article, and I can make about the same by self-publishing on my own Medium/Substack sites. But if you are able to pay me considerably more for a piece, I’d certainly be open to it.
  • Because the nature of my work has been transdisciplinary, I have carried out research and written academic articles across numerous fields. So if you are working on a paper or project that requires such assistance, I might be able to help.

Consulting, Reading, and Feedback

Perhaps you are writing an article or book about trans people, or working on a project at the intersection of gender, sexuality, science, and/or social justice, and are interested in my feedback? Or require a beta reader or sensitivity reader? Or want to pick my brain about getting published or self-publishing? Or activism? Or have questions about anything I have written or done?

I would be happy to consult with you and provide feedback on any of these matters if you think I can be of help — just let me know!

I have general price points in mind for all these services, although I am open to negotiating if necessary. So if you are interested in any of these possibilities, please contact me and we’ll take it from there!
